Puzzle #8

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed He was walking along the beach with the LORD. Across the sky flashed scenes from His life. For each scene He noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One belonging to Him and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of His life flashed before Him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of His life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of His life.

This really bothered Him and He questioned the LORD about it. LORD you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.

The LORD replied, my precious, precious child, I Love you and I would never leave you! During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.

Puzzle #6 - The Actual Proposal

On Friday the 11th, we went to Jeremy’s cabin with his family and sister’s friends. It was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing; at least I thought so at the time. We left as soon as I was packed after I got home from classes. It was dark by the time we got there, so we had to hike up the hill in the deep snow with our backpacks and everything. So we got up there and had dinner. Ondy, his sister, introduced me to her friends that were there. She said, “This is Tara, Jeremy’s f-friend, girlfriend.” Now what was she going to say right then? We played some games and I got some homework done. I knew that I wouldn’t have any time other than right then to get it done that weekend. Jeremy got dressed in his snow gear to go hide the clues for the puzzle that night.

I could tell it was something a little more extravagant because he kept consulting with his parents in the back room. It sure was something sneaky and they were all into it. Then he took off with his brother Zachary and Zac’s friend Bryce. As we waited, we tried to get the two-way radios to work, but to no avail.

Jeremy returned without his brother and gave me the first clue after I got suited up.

This led me to the snowmobile outside, where I found the next clue,

Of course, this referred to the trip we made during Christmas break where he took me up to his fort. On the way back he tackled me and white-washed me. He is so mean. I got sweet, sweet revenge. He deserved it. But anyway, back to the clue.

We took off on the snowmobile and found the clue inside a Pringles canister half-buried in the snow.

Clue #3 stated,

What could that be? I know we’re going to get married in the temple, but what is he talking about? After a few subtle hints, I finally figured out it referred to the swings. The next clue was hidden in a link of one of the swing’s chains. Very hard to find in the dark, it took me a minute to find it.

The funniest thing was that he tried to take a picture of me. I was all centered in the frame, and he pushed the button, but then I sank up to my waist in the snow. The only thing captured in the picture was the top of my hat.

He was also in thigh-deep, and we had quite the time trudging back to the road.

This clue stated,

Up to the basketball court we went. I drove! First time ever!

After some more trudging, I found the last clue,

I knew exactly where he was talking about, but he said we should wait a couple of minutes to make sure they were set up. Don’t want to jump the gun. He was waist deep again, so the obvious thing to do was lay back and look at the stars. Arm-in-arm, we watched as a shooting star crossed the snow-speckled sky. I believe we made the same wish.

After trying to start the snowmobile almost 100 times, we finally got it started and headed off towards the picnic with the snow fluttering down around us. As we approached, Zac and Bryce were standing on the side of road, camera in hand. Looking to my left, I noticed that there was an unusually bright light coming from the cabin. I thought they were words but chose not to read them yet. Bryce asked, “Sparkling cider?” He got us some clear plastic cups and after some fumbling poured us each a glass. On the side of the road, there was a picnic blanket spread out. On top, there was a letter held down by a lantern.

I picked up the letter and proceeded to read it out loud. I almost finished a paragraph when I was interrupted by a popping sound. Down in the meadow, fireworks were going off. I stood up and read what was on the lights from the cabin, “PLEASE SAY YES.” I looked at Jeremy and said, “You know my answer is yes.” He got down on one knee, asked me to take off my glove, and pulled out a ring box.

I could hardly control myself from the excitement. “Tara, will you marry me?” “Yes!” He slipped the ring on my finger. “Wow! I love you!” We embraced and turned to watch the fireworks together. “This is the best day of my life.”

The timing was completely off, but I guess that it makes it that much more real. The first form of communication to give the signal, the radios, failed. The second was signaling with the lights of the snowmobile, well, that didn’t work out the way it was planed. The sign was turned on before we even got there, I don’t think that was supposed to be on. I think I was supposed to finish reading the letter, and then he was supposed to signal for the sign and he was going to propose. I guess that even the best-laid plans don’t go off the way they should.

As we were talking later, I found out all of the planning and work that occurred behind my back this entire week. I couldn’t believe how conniving and secretive my fiancĂ© could be. He had called Kristen, my roommate, to tell her to plan a girls’ night so he would have time to go up to Salt Lake to pick out my ring. Not only did he do that on Thursday, he made another trip to Salt Lake on Friday to pick up the ring. It was even more frustrating to know that she knew on Tuesday, so he could get away. He managed to make the sign, which has about 900 holes that he had to punch out, and I was wondering why he wasn’t getting any sleep that week. I guess I love him all the more for putting so much effort into all of this. He is even going to continue to give me puzzles, such as figuring out the “smallest happy prime number” (Puzzle #6).

Puzzle #5

Puzzle #5 was emailed to me because it was girls’ night at my apartment. No boys allowed! He had told me the night before that I would be getting my clue in the mailbox. He didn’t tell me that it would be an electronic one. He made me feel silly for checking the mailbox on my way in from work that day. I had received the email earlier when I was at work but didn’t check it until I got home.

Attached was a song, which I had to identify. The song was “One,” by Three Dog Night.

That night, I also received a call that Jeremy didn’t think would happen. My dad called to say that Jeremy had called to ask for my hand. I was expecting this, although I didn’t think that it would occur this soon. I was still under the impression that he wasn’t going to propose for some time, at least sometime when I was going to finish working through the puzzles. He even told me that it wouldn’t conflict with my schedule. I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this. I knew that I had MLK weekend off, as well as the first couple of weeks of February. So I was thinking that he was going to propose sometime on one of those weekends. How wrong I was. I had my first overly large clue, but I didn’t pick up on it as well as I should have.

Puzzle #4

On day 4, things started to come together a little bit. It was an anagram in which I had to rearrange the letters of the 3 previous answers.

He tricked me into thinking that the first one was “bunny,” but instead it was “eye” (the piece missing). “Eye,” “moreover,” and “flavoury” were rearranged to spell, “You are my forever love.”

Puzzle #3

Puzzle #3 was a picture of two lovebirds feeding each other.

On the back was the poem, “Two little love birds sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g, first comes love, then comes marriage, then come the baby in the baby carriage.”

I knew immediately that he was referring to the tree we climbed on one of our first dates. The time he wanted to kiss me but chickened out. So we went there and sure enough, there was a grocery bag hanging in the tree. How romantic! Thanks for making me climb a tree. I appreciated it. What will he come up with next? So I climbed the tree and got the bag. Inside there were a bunch of chocolate kisses. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with them, so we started walking back to my apartment. Then I realized that if there was a Clue #1, there had to be a Clue #2. But where was it? He gave me the clue, “If you were me, what would you do?” There had to be something else in the tree. So we turned around to go back to the tree. He was just bluffing.

The next clue was actually hidden in one of the kisses. We went back to my apartment and spread them out on the table. I got the correct one on the second try. Yes! I’m good. It was a little larger at the bottom compared to the others, how could it be any other one?

Clue #2 said, “First you must kiss me here and now. Second, go to the place where I first had the guts to kiss the most beautiful girl in the world.” We headed towards my doorstep. My roommate Mel had intercepted the clue earlier. She slipped it through the crack in the open door and I looked down and picked it up.

It had a poem and at the bottom said, “The answer to Puzzle #3 is ‘flavoury’” What kind of word is that? Umm…isn’t that British spelling? I don’t think that is an actual word in the American English dictionary. Where is this going? I now had three clues…how did they fit together?

Puzzle #2

Today, which is the first day of class for Winter semester, I got another puzzle. It was titled “one + one = one”.

I had to find out which pairs of words went together to make larger words then alphabetize them to find out which one was the 5th word, which was the answer (moreover). What kind of answer is “moreover”?!? What am I supposed to do with “bunny” and “moreover”?

Puzzle #01

Today Jeremy informed me that I would have a surprise waiting for me at Ward Prayer. At this point, we had already spoken together about getting married, so I was thinking that he was going to propose or something of that sort. I suspected, but I wasn’t really sure, and I definitely didn’t want him to do so right there. That wouldn’t make a very long or interesting story. I know that we had plans for later that week to go ring shopping. So I really wasn’t sure what was going to happen.

I went to Ward Prayer a little early. When I got there, Kacie Milne, who seemed almost more enthusiastic than usual, if that’s possible, greeted me. I started thinking that maybe she knew something that I didn’t. She is, after all, the person in charge of announcements at Ward Prayer. I sat there for a few minutes and soon enough it started. Jeremy still wasn’t there. Leave it to him to be fashionably late and he was empty handed. I of course had to ask him what the surprise was. He did his irritating uninformative smile. “Just wait, you’ll see.” So I waited, nothing happened during Ward Prayer. And after we sat there talking, still nothing happened.

Finally, we decided to leave. Jeremy stated the obvious, “There are still quite a few people here.” Right outside the door, there was my surprise. It was a beautiful bouquet with my name on it. At the base of the vase, there was a jigsaw puzzle in a bag with the label, “Puzzle #1, Jigsaw Puzzle.” There were people waiting outside talking. Also there were people peeking through the glass door. Kacie mimed putting a ring on a finger and mouthed, “Are you proposing?” Jeremy furrowed his brow and shook his head in denial. He had something much bigger in mind. This was only the beginning.

Upon assembling the jigsaw puzzle, I found that it was a bunny with one piece missing. How tacky of him for not checking to see if all the pieces were there. So one puzzle solved, who knew how many more to go.
